, while not an instant rejection, definitely counts as a strike. The people who use "grey" instead of "gray" are the ones who fancy themselves most poetic. "Fancy" is about the kindest epithet I can apply to their writing, unfortunately.
Both entries exist in Merriam-Webster, of course, but it is quite clear which spelling is preferred:
One possible explanation, of course, is that would-be poets spend a lot of time drinking Earl Grey tea, which may color their view of the word.
