How to make friends and influence

Starting a blog comment with, "Um..." is the equivalent of entering a conversation with, "You're an idiot, and now I'm going to tell you why." Everyone knows that's what it means, and therefore no one is any less offended by it.

(This hasn't happened to me, at least not lately, but I just ran across such an instance while searching for some Javascript info.)

Additionally, it looks idiotic to put a pause-filler in print. People have plenty of time to compose their thoughts when commenting on a blog. A comment thread may be a dialogue, but it is not verbal communication.

The guilty parties should be forced to wear boxing gloves for 2 weeks. That ought to slow their words-per-minute to the point where their brains move faster than their typing.
